Hungarian Mythology

Sárkány (dragon)Appearing in almost all folk tales, a creature not similar to Chinese dragon or dragon from West Europe. He is always man-shaped, can ride a horse, and has usually seven heads, sometimes three, 12 or 21 (relating to numbers in astronomy). Dragons usually symbolised human behaviour or character, i.e. when the hero was fighting with him, he was fighting to overcome his own bad behaviour, habit or characteristic. This made me look up Revelations 13.

Revelation 13New International Version (NIV)

The Beast out of the Sea

13 The dragon[a] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.  The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?

More Hungarian Mythology
Hadúr (god)Short for Hadak Ura, meaning "Warlord" or "Master of Armies" and was the war god in the religion of the early Hungarians. He was the third son of Arany Atyácska (Dear Golden Father) and Hajnal Anyácska (Dear Dawn Mother) and was also the metalsmith of the gods. He wore armor and weapons made of pure copper, which is his sacred metal, and it was said that he forged the Sword of God (Isten kardja) which was discovered by Attila the Hun and secured his rule. It was customary for the Hungarians to sacrifice white stallions to him before a battle.
I have been doing research into if Genghis Khan was actually Caine from the Bible. Kane was a metal worker and they were usually nomads and wore a mark to show they were blacksmiths. Sometimes they were hurt in some way so that the could not get away and needed the protection of the people who needed a blacksmith. Think of the Greek and Roman myths of Hephaetus and Vulcan who had bad foot and leg. It seems Hadur would be another take on the same God but with a different name. In a Hungarian origin story, Genghis Khan was a descendant of Noah through Japeth. Genghis Khan's name was Temujin which was a Mongol word(temur)iron. Temujin means blacksmith. There is so much more to find out in this area of the world it seems.

  1. Interesting about Cain. He was suppose to be a nomad, but in his disobedience he build a city and Nimrod continued on his 'bent'. Tower of Babel is revised in this day and age under the same 'spirit' and mentality - anti God and pro-pride-self and be 'as the gods'! Pride in a corrupt soul is like power, unrestrained are dangerous and bent on evil.

    1. I feel there is a lot more to the Cain story. It is a sound that is still used such as in hurricane, canine and in one of my favorite creation stories in Hawaii. The God Kane who did not believe in sacrifices and wanted everyone to be at peace and created a world of order. I hope we get back to that soon :)

    2. Just watched this movie recently and it shows man's 'fix' for the human condition. That 'peace and order' might be different in eyes of the beholder! "The Giver" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435651/
