Socialism Promotes Private Ownership?

So my son and I have been doing a government class for school this year.
We have been going through a unit called AP Comparative Government and Politics thru Georgia Virtual Learning
 http://www.gavirtuallearning.org/Resources/SharedAPGovernmentComparative.aspx

There has been a noticeable bias but that is common in these types of courses. My main goal is for my son to see the bias and to learn to critical think.  We know that a lot of young people today are for socialism as it is pushed from grade school on but I did not realize until this class exactly how it was being pushed in the upper grades.

Here is an excerpt from the chapter on Sovereignty, Authority and Power

To eliminate inequalities and exploitation, communists advocate the takeover of all resources by the state that in turn will insure that true economic equality exists for the community as a whole. Socialism shares the value of equality with communism but is also influenced by the liberal value of freedom.
Socialists accept and promote private ownership and free market principles, but also believe that the state has a strong role to play in regulating the economy and providing benefits to the public in order to ensure some measure of equality.

Hmm was there a typo and Capitalism was suppose to be there instead of Socialism? I do not remember that being the definition of Socialism.
Let's look at the dictionary.

Full Definition of socialism

  1. 1:  any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
  2. 2a :  a system of society or group living in which there is no private propertyb :  a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
  3. 3:  a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done  per Merriam-Webster Dictionary

That seems more like what I learned in school. I do not remember this freedom
and promotion of private ownership. I can understand why the young people want that because that sounds great.

Full Definition of capitalism

  1. :  an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market. per Merriam-Webster Dictionary

I think we will find a different course for government this year.

  1. Good for you doing homework w/ your son! Some schools don't allow parents to help OR do you home school?
I like too that you're teaching him 'critical thinking' which some even consider it 'not politically acceptable' but that's because of the dark mindset cover being forced over this Nation! Numbing and strong delusion.
We know that only reason the 'evils that be' are pushing this 'equality' for all - except them, of course, they get top shelf of everything while the 'peons' work and provide it. Soon though they hope to have robots and tech do away with the human factor, then they will have more time to indulge themselves in their dark imaginations and lusts.
One thing they push about this to the religious indoctrinated is that what the disciplines were doing in Acts when they all owned everything together:
Acts 4:34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 4:35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
But this was under the supervision of the Holy Ghost! And when a married coupled acted as thought they were part of the group, but held back part of what they'd received: But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Acts 5:3-4
In other words, in man's fallen sin nature state this 'commune living' doesn't work. The GREAT UTOPIA is an illusion (ye shall be as gods), BUT only a small group who worship the god of this world (who usurped it from Adam when he feel - the devil) reap the rewards and benefits.
Interesting info though. Hope your son is appreciating and retaining what he's learn 'knowing good and evil' and choosing the good, but aware of the evil!
